I say surface level because I found there to be so little subtext. The director is constantly bonking you on the head with the central conceit, so that, over the course of 100 minutes, it becomes frustrating. In my view it makes what could have been a powerful short into a poor feature.

I understood the allegory, I’d say it goes out of its way to be unambiguous in that respect. I don’t think it’s unfair to describe a film that is consistency nudging you in the ribs to remind you of its themes and context as surface level, regardless of personal experience.
