Admittedly, books don't fit into my current lifestyle. Making time to read doesn't come naturally to me any more, so it was a struggle. But people have been telling me to read this book because I am a gamer and a game designer. The book was also gifted to me, so I felt a little obligated to read it.

Ultimately what drew me in wasn't the game themes, but I want to acknowledge how it feels to read a book written in my "language." The author understands games. She understands how they correlate to real life. She was able to connect me to her story through this, and it felt good to read.

This is a book about relationships. Zevin does a masterful job of using games as a metaphor for this. Every relationship in the story has a game inside of it. Sometimes the game is representative of the nature of the relationship, and sometimes the game acts as the foundation of the relationship.

Occasionally I struggled to understand the mannerisms of the characters. At times they'd act in ways that seemed contradictory to the personality I'd built for them. I attribute this partly to myself, but I think it's also intentional. It aims to break the mold on the boundaries of relationships.

Despite this, I found Sam & Sadie's relationship well constructed and relatable. Boundaries of love between close friends are confusing and contradictory. They're simultaneously possessive and respectful, painful and nurturing, close and distant. I've had, and still have, relationships like this.

I think Sam & Sadie's love/hate relationship is more indicative of their own personalities. They embody each other's goals, interests, and desires, and their relationship strengthens and falters more as a result of how they treat themselves rather than how they treat each other.
