If you're old enough to remember 1965, you know what happened when a safety relay accidentally tripped at a power station in Ontario. Part of Ontario and 10 states in the northeast U.S. lost power for 13 hours. Klaatu barada nikto!

But if I recall correctly, that one began south of the border, in New York State. It was a similar cascade failure at a time when there was heavy demand for electricity (that time, for air conditioning).
