We define different variance components of a plastic trait along some environmental variable : the variance due to the average shape of the reaction norm (V_Plas), the genetic variance (V_Gen) and a residual variance (V_Res).

Because we are using mainly an evolutionary perspective, we focus on the *additive* genetic variance (V_Add, h²_RN) in the reaction norms, which we separate into an environment-blind component (V_A, h²) and the component arising from variation in plasticity (V_AxE, h²_I)

This decomposition is extremely general, and can be applied to any model of reaction norm, e.g. linear or non-linear curve-parameter and character-state. As such, it is (we hope!) quite a unifying framework, even theoretically speaking.

We further show how those variance components can be decomposed according to slope and curvature for V_Plas (π-decomposition, we call it), and to parameters for V_Add and V_AxE (respectively γ- and ι-decomposition).

These finely parametrised decompositions will be useful (again, we hope!) to characterise shape of and evolutionary potential in reaction norms across contexts, especially using the variance-standardised estimates we propose (mean-standardisation is complex for reaction norms and less general).
