My great grandmother was beaten in the Indian boarding school she was taken to for speaking the language, and was too scared to teach it to her kids. It did not protect them still, they still took my grandmother and her sister to the Immaculate Conception Mission School.

Now I can barely learn the language unless I find a way to move back to South Dakota, or maybe Minnesota to learn it some an actual Lakota teacher. @takenalive.bsky.social couldn't even use his own grandmother's recordings to help teach kids on the rez their own language! This is DEPRAVITY.

there are really good programs for dakota/lakota at UMN twin cities, and ive met the chair several times. they also offer scholarships. reach out to them and see if you can set something up online?

also if you want a grammar for lakota i can get you a PDF. i'm not sure what access is like for lakota specifically but linguists will just publish grammars for 100s of dollars and not give any copies to the communities they steal the language from so if that's something you need lmk

Looks like Jan Ullrich has been banned from a number of Indigenous territories. His white colleague Wilhelm Meya has also been banished. Yeah, I have a Lakota friend who visited Germany & was extremely weirded out by German people who thought they were Lakota & were obsessed with doing everything "Lakota" correctly. I was totally a white kid who pretended to be an Indian, ngl. But once I understood, I changed my ways. 1/2
