I know the measles vaccine is highly effective but, without herd immunity, is there still a decent chance of vaccinated people contracting measles? I'm asking seriously, I don't know the answer. If they're putting us or our children at risk we should start suing them. - ThreadSky

Measles isn't the bad one. Hell, when I was a kid, if you got measles or the mumps, your parents would have a party. That way it blanketed the neighborhood at one time. What happens when we get back Polio, Rubella, Small Pox?

Young parents don't remember these diseases ever "existing" but they'll understand once their children start dying. It's heartbreaking and avoidable. I'm old enough to have second hand experience. My aunt was partially paralyzed from polio, my friend's pregnant mother contracted Rubella, etc.

All cases of measles occurred in unvaccinated people (or their status was unknow- cases have now doubled in this county.

Thanks. I guess I'm trying to understand how essential herd immunity is in protecting us. If a community falls below the threshold then residents would be exposed more frequently. At that point 97% no longer feels quite as bulletproof. I'm sure I'm overthinking this but I'm furious.

The new cases nationwide & TX come as the state’s measles vaccination rate among kindergarteners has dropped. The vaccination rate was 97% in the 2019-20 school year & declined to 94.3% for 2023-24. The number of vaccine exemption requests in TX have doubled from 45,900 in 2018 to 93,000 in 2024.
