I am an eternal optimist. But living in a red state and completely aware of these underlying themes, I found this thought provoking and disheartening at the depth of the right wing nationalism. I recommend from a sociological perspective, but I can’t help feeling this only ends in a civil war.😢

Stands out that Pogue cannot bring himself to say the actual underlying assumptions - actually out loud. The "socalizing" (non-violent civilizing) project has been a success - showing that non-violent civilized character is in fact part of human nature and the natural order....

Violence and "might makes right" in a state of relative abundance is a choice and is not inherently masculine. Men need war for meaning? The might makes right systemic residual ("mystical") power remains very seductive (always will) - and Pogue himself seems under its spell.
