Good piece. A lot of soul searching is certainly healthy for Dems. Ultimately, there has been a leadership issue with party for sometime. Whatever the new message is, it won’t sell without effective leader(s).

This started strong, but a) it still feels like Dems keep fighting the last war (the last election is over!) & b) it’s hard not to feel that this “listen and don’t condescend” rule does not apply to the Dem base. In fact, it seems more a matter of who gets ignored and condescended to now. Not great.

Rep Auchincloss needs a better grip on long term care in America - it’s already wildly out of reach! LTC is only available to the very wealthy & very poor (via Medicaid). If you’re anywhere between that (most folks), LTC is the burden of family members 1/

That's indeed an issue for many people, but it also reads like just another "throw money at a problem" idea. The party needs a consistent message about how to restore upward mobility to this country. That's the key to building a strong enough base to attempt the other stuff.

Stipulated. But every single person will age. Every single person will age into disability, will need some form of long term care, will need that burden of them relieved from their loved ones. Fixing that particular problem (which we can throw $ at) frees time, $, energy to do hard things.

Most often, that family member is the female spouse, daughter, or DIL. This care burden is ALWAYS borne by women & it is KILLING US. Dems want a big idea? Universal elder care with a livable wage for the (again, mostly women of color) who perform that highly skilled labor. 2/

Appreciate his fresh takes on many important issues, just wish you could also say that about his views on Palestine/Israel. The party needs someone with big ideas to step up, but they need that alongside genuine humanitarians who don’t make exceptions for international law and human rights.
