This was great to listen to. But I would've liked to hear Mr. Krugman's assessment of the paper by the WH Council of Economic Advisers' Stephen Miran, cited by your earlier guest the FT's Gillian Tett as a kind of Rosetta stone re Trump tariffs. Your colleague Ross Douthat also touted this paper.

Listen carefully to what @pkrugman.bsky.social says throughout this visit in response to Ezra’s questions. So many things to ponder not the least of which is, what does Donald Trump actually know? The conversation suggests, not enough. Mr. Krugman knows more that seems very clear.

What I do not get is how both try to make sense of the Trump economical policy.
I think it is rather easy. Just try these three words to explain his strategy:

- Admiration
- Personal (Trump’s) power and wealth
- Putin

No - the word ‘economy’ is not in there.
He simply doesn’t care.

Does anybody remember how the Russian economy worked after the breakdown of the USSR?

They had ridiculously high tariffs. Importing things to Russia meant bribing customs officers to circumvent the tariffs.

Outcome: corruption and oligarchs, no legal way to make money.

Great interview including the anecdote about Obama. Obama was right on the economics of TPP but wrong on the politics, because the US did not and does not have a comprehensive policy on economic justice. Biden's efforts to promote "Buy American" through regulations was an abundant failure.

A lot of big podcasters are still using the books backdrop and even worse. It doesn't take much to add "production values" to you podcast. As the media is challenged, Liberals should up their game. That is what I am encouraging.

When NAFTA was crafted in 86 there was a lot of opposition in Canada. Concerns around sovereignty. It took 40 years but those fears have fully materialized. Canadians will retrench and diversify trade. It will be painful, and there will be no support for another NAFTA for generations.

Who don't get that the uncertainty is harmful astounds me. OTOH, nobody disagrees with the 2nd sentence - that as long as MAGA is in power last year's "best deal ever" can be discarded at any time and replaced with something completely different. I.e. we can only rely on economic chaos

Trump 45 renegotiated NAFTA and declared NAFTA 2.0 "the best deal ever". Trump 47 then said his own NAFTA 2.0 is terrible. Even if things settle down and seem to be stable for a few months you have to fear that if Trump's ego is hurt he may just start doing crazy shit again at any time.

Trump's entire life history is him breaking his word repeatedly. As long as he (or people who want to emulate him) are in power your visibility into future policy is clouded and the ability to correctly predict future conditions is a key factor in efficiency.
