People choose the leaders. There are always evil corrupt leaders who get away with murder because WE THE PEOPLE chose them. Approx. 62% vote in general elections. Last midterms in my city 32% voted. When Beto O’Rourke ran I TX - TWICE and less than 40% bothered to vote. That’s how you get Ted Cruz.
You can only choose a good leader if you are offered good candidates. And what incentive do they have to do that if you say you will vote for them no matter what?
Passive people would never know OR be able to recognize a good leader. And a good leader can NOT be chosen if only 32% -60% bothers to vote. If Beto O’Rourke was not a good candidate- who would be?
Bit presumptuous of you to assume those who want someone decent to vote for are passive. I would say they are quite the opposite. It is those willing to accept whatever crumbs are slung their way who are passive.
BTW - in my native birth country of Denmark almost all people vote. People pay attention to everything and participate. The have 11 political parties with a different democratic system that THE PEOPLE have help form because they participate (voted for) in their communities.
So, the non-voting people on who receives ACA health insurance and pay $45 a month for health care (that would otherwise cost $1000/month without gov subsidies) don’t vote so they can get rid of their inexpensive healthcare, and get rid of free public schools and want the rich get get richer?
-appreciating democracy and not taking it for granted
-compulsory voting
-citizens paying attention to and caring about who represents them
-a third party
