Ignoring the social media piece for a moment, I think there is reasonable evidence of increased mental health issues overall, post-COVID at least. The stats on disability are more well-tracked, of ehich mental illness is a subset

At my university, students seeking accomodations for disability have also doubled to around 20-25% of all students since COVID, a big chunk of which is mental illness.

Attempts to access services are way up, even as funding is cut. I doubt social media is the cause, but something has likely changed

I agree that is worrisome and worth investigating. I like @lucyfoulkes.bsky.social writing on this.
I doubt the right strategy is to negate uncertainty around measurement issues and try to force a premature consensus

Science will never be able to answer these questions with much certainty, since doing so will require impossible tasks (e.g. long-term, high-compliance, network-aware RCTs; or time traveling to edit diagnostic criteria)

Policymakers should rely less on scientists.

I think scientists should inject the uncertainty that tends to go missing in these discussions. I agree that policymakers could decide to ban based on precaution etc. but they should not be misled to think we know it will work. Maybe that way we can get some randomization in policy.
