I try to be as aggressive as possible about offering students extensions on their assignments. And it's clear so many of them have had horrible experiences in their past with disrespect from instructors.

We've been experimenting with a policy of kindness and flexibility when it comes to accommodations in our grad program. Early evidence suggests the policy is effective in reducing everyone's stress and making the department a generally more pleasant place to be.
