‘Christmas Day in the Workhouse' literally in this 1904 image of the main dining hall of Rothwell Workhouse. It feels extremely shocking as we think of them as being very much a Victorian institution but this one did not open until 1903. to serve the Hunslet & District Poor

With a long tail as many continued to be used by local authorities to house poor / elderly people for some decades. Plus their infirmary buildings often became general hospitals some of which are still used by the NHS.

Indeed, my kids were born in a hospital which was formerly a workhouse. And the infirmary wing of my local workhouse is now a health centre and pharmacy.

Many medium sized towns & cities still have 2 hospital sites because one originally was the middle class subscription hospital & the other the workhouse.

I stopped researching my family tree when I discovered the Liverpool Workhouse records of my maternal great grandmother. It was possible to feel the abject poverty she raised her children in (period was 1905-1915). I can see people today who want us to return to those days.

My Dad had a story about a neighbour, with 4 kids, who was getting relief from the authorities. They said they were stopping it, so he replied that, if they did, he'd be on the doorstep of the workhouse the next day with the whole family & that would cost them much more money! Relief continued...
