Ah, gotcha. I got a little excited there about them fruiting again. I found a log this fall with literally hundreds popping & spreading spores. I don’t want to miss out on visiting the same spot when they’re fruiting next.

Just because I can immediately ID them, doesn't mean a new forager could, especially when they've only seen pictures or read descriptions. I forget that instant recognition is only because I've IDed countless numbers of both.
I only recently started eating them.

I would cut them anyway to make sure they were still good & hadn't started going to spore, especially later in the season. I sliced them in ~1/2" rounds, similar to scallops, & if they weren't pure white, uniform texture & firm-spongy they went in the compost. Do some people cook them whole?
