This is crazy to finally be happening cuz the casts of the touring and broadway companies were very vocal about the last of diversity in the shows casting. Took a movie for it to finally happen.

There have been several Elphaba understudies who are Black who have hit the Broadway stage. In West End’s theatre circuit, Alexia Khadime was the first Black woman to take on the role full-time.

A story about skin color based discrimination, women as second class citizens, and the fight against marginalization, casting Black women as the principal character truly drives home the messaging. Cynthia being a Black queer woman and the face of the musical today really speaks to who Elphaba is.
