What about making screen readers that convert everything to plain letters before reading messages out? I'm guessing that's already a thing?

Ohhh a lot of them use things like Cyrillic or math set theory symbols, that's a much bigger challenge.

Adding to this, that is NOT just screen readers:

people with dyslexia
people with low vision
people with learning difficulties
non-native English speakers
people with limited time or attention span
even hard to read for sighted users

I feel like you should only ever be using letters and symbols from the character map. Even then I'm not quite sure how some of those would sound, if announced by a screen reader at all.

The best kind of internet is one that is open-source and ACCESSIBLE.

I agree and don't use it but much like someone speaking a different language in an English chat and expecting 1000s to learn that different language that just doesn't work. One has to adapt, fight for the technology that makes the change not the people. Even wheelchairs are adjusting for stairs now.

This too! I wanted to also add that they are usually hard to read, annoying to see, and folks won't feel the want to share the post.
