Sadly this doesn’t surprise me because even when you look online there’s no clarity about the different terms. Total hysterectomy is only the uterus and cervix. But it sounds like it would include everything.

I'm having a hysterectomy this month and even though I'm a biologist I wasn't sure I understood how the procedure was performed so I watched a YouTube video of the procedure. We need a better understanding of female anatomy.

I had (minor) surgery last year—far less invasive than a hysterectomy—and the surgeon was clearly surprised that I had “so many questions” about exactly what would happen during & after the procedure. Often when I use a technical term I get pushback from medical professionals, that instead of speaking concisely I end up playing a game where I say "I am having [colloquial definition of term] and they say "ah yes, [term]" like shitty medical charades so they won't be annoyed and I get what I need

I have done a lot of healthcare writing so they usually ask me that, too! I know enough to be dangerous, as they say. But, like, that question makes me think they’re rethinking what they say, as in, “oops can’t fool this person if they’re in healthcare.” Keeps them on their toes.

my mom had what we thought was a total hysterectomy, but due to the severity of her endo and other issues, the surgeon couldn’t actually remove *everything*. two decades later, ovarian cancer grew in the fragments left behind.
