It's my understanding that when SS was established, the funds which started to be paid in went out in benefits to seniors who, at that time, had not contributed bc it hadn't existed. The understanding is that the next generation pays for the one before. But, there's no CRASH like the Ponzi stuff.

The funds are held in trust and are not allowed to be invested in risky assets (like Tesla stock) - only gov't loans. That's why people say the gov has borrowed from Social Security. The fund gets interest income from the general tax fund. Win/win.
