A good way to elicit thought is leaving space between lines and to structure the melody in a rhetorical way, e.g., use rhythm and play with emphasis by accentuating/elongating certain words; don't try to write an elaborate sung melody, make it more speech-orientated in delivery. cf. Frank Turner
