Martin Amis (born 1951) felt in 2014 - aged 65 - that Englishness was about being white. A large minority (35%) of those his age thought so then, when 22% thought it ethnically defined. But over 65s shifted most on this over the last decade

I do think Konstantin Kisin - "he is a brown Hindu, how is he English?" did seem to demonstrates a rather weak grasp of the English and British history in United Kingdom and the Commonwealth. Kisin came to the UK from Russia as an 11 year old in 1993.

Many British-born Asians may have 2 big advantages over Kisin: both being born here (though having come here at 11, he should not be at so much of a disadvantage) + in understanding why UK/Commonwealth context in distinct v US & v western Europe

My PhD was on 18thC London and I occasionally have to remind myself that we gave Catholics the vote and allowed them to live in London and own transport.
