Yep. In fact it gets even more interesting: in Tokyo you're not allowed to possess a vehicle if you don't own a permanent parking space for it (at your home or wherever).

It is an extremely common (perhaps dominant) perspective in the US. Growing up in suburbs in the South, I didn't use my bicycle as anything other than a toy until I went on a 10-mile group ride in Portland. Surprised at not being exhausted, I realized I could use it for transport. Simple but real.

38,000,000 people in one city, and somehow the streets are so empty of vehicles that people walk or cycle right in the middle of them.
