US tipping culture baffles me. You order your meal, the server does their job, and at the end, you’re stuck inflating the bill out of guilt because owners won’t pay proper wages. Why is this on us? Price the food honestly, pay staff fairly, and end this nonsense already.

It's really obnoxious when fast food has tipping. I really don't like that.
did i make less than i would with traditional tips? probably, but consistency made up for it imo and it made me feel like a part of something
I love going to other countries where there are simply no tips at all. The price is the price is the price. End of story. Makes the whole going-out experience way more relaxing.
The UK has now settled on baking in the trad 12.5% in restaurants by adding it by default, although it is optional if you really don't want to pay it. But that's about the only time a service charge is expected.
An order was taken, I paid the menu prices, had a water brought out, and then I left. I'm not guilt driving up the cost 20% because a delusional society says so.
That said, if I go to a place where the workers depend on tipping, I tip generously. Get carryout?
The money fuckery is deeply embedded in the US culture
The only way to solve this is regulation.
Same thing in reverse is places adding surcharges instead of raising prices.

Should be banned from the payment terminals.
Guilt isn’t required for diners to add a standard 20% tip.
All that’s needed is understanding that if the labor was being paid a fair wage, the menu prices would be at least that much higher anyway.
1. Tips (just pay people a proper wage!!)
2. Tax not being included in the displayed price (you have to pay the tax as well so include it in the overall price, this is the norm in Europe!!)
He came over to the table and shouted. ' I wanna tell you folk, gratuities are NOT included'
He'd been nice as pie all night...
But it then caught on nationwide in large part due to prohibition.
And this is before back of the house gets involved.
We have family in the industry who have worked at both types of restaurants, and they acknowledge there is no simple answer.

Pay for performance is one thing, but glorified slave labour is another.
