If you just joined a school with a traditional lecture-based teaching, as a principal, what would be your first step towards implementing #UDL? #EduSky #EduChat #UDLchat #cultureshift

If I could do only one thing to shift learning in a school community, I would hang a big banner that reads: The barriers is in the design, not the learner. And no matter the discussion topic, I'd bring people back to this statement. It is the greatest design call to action I know. #UDL
U could start by host PD sessions 2 intro Ts to #UDL & how benefits all learners. Learner agency being the goal, learner variability being predictable, barriers in the design & not the learners. Encourage small, manageable opps-& when in meetings, model UDL #UDLchat

Personally, I would never want to assume that the teacher is not effective with lecture. Time to unpack the standards, expected performances, alignment of assessment items, and data to think about how well the instruction works for some and what we might be able to brain-storm for the others.
Speaking from a science perspective with NGSS, UDL, as an additional planning framework, is often just too overwhelming for people still learning their standards and still shifting instruction. But as a *reflection* tool, UDL can be a powerful way to plan ahead for next steps or for next time.
Great perspective, thanks. I understand and value the effectiveness of lectures, what concerns me is that when 95% of the classes are solely relying on lectures, there’s very little room for student agency and a student-centered approach, especially when paired with a boxed-curriculum.
