Thompson synthesizes DeepSeek's technical papers and pulls out the most important, unexpected discoveries, and he points out the long-term implications for the AI industry here in the US. This is the best commentary on DeepSeek I've seen.

Rather than the (very bad) "explanations" given by journalists, you should just read the actual paper to understand what DeepSeek did. I found several interesting things I didn't know (e.g., that language mixing can help with reasoning in the models).

What I find interesting, and hopeful for humanity's future, is DeepSeek's reason for open-sourcing their model. They are attempting to convey a sense of friendly competition to advance the field and improve trust (since apparently there is no stopping competition even if models are closed-source).
