I've read for a year, then it's renewable, if they don't die or get lost in the system. In my naivety, I assumed deportees were sent back to their home countries. Not a third country prison system

Seems like at some point El Salvador will just be paying to house hundreds or thousands of people indefinitely for no particular reason other than Trump wanting to look tough.
I don't believe there will be any way to visit or contact those imprisoned. So there probably isn't any accountability as to how long they actually survive there. Not like our courts held a trial and actually sentenced them.
