If only there were a load of countries on our doorstep filled with workers who really want these jobs and could freely come and fill this shortage without any barriers eh.

But aren’t there like 6 million people on unemployment benefits?
Surely some of them can be convinced to take up apprenticeships and boom, you have increased the amount of productivity each qualified builder has through the addition of labour under their direction.
UK builders have relied too heavily on EU tradespeople over the years and now it's come back to bite them on the arse.
Govt could/should incentivise employers to invest in apprenticeship schemes but successive Govts have failed.
I get the feeling Starmer will one day stand up in Parliament, shrug his shoulders, and it'll be: "Well, everyone, I know what I said, but it's like this....."
get the brexshitty gammons on the social off their fat arses and onto building sites, they took control,
now send them to sites, they refuse then stop their social.. gammons needs consequences
So true. I have a team of 16 accountants and 8 are from Europe: Slovakia, Slovenia, Romania, Czech, Poland. All amazing. Dedicated, bright and hard working.
Indeed , there is some bizarre belief that for every skills vacancy we have , there is someone unemployed just waiting to step in .FFS we aren’t even self sufficient in unskilled labour .
What has happened to planning for skills of the last 15 yrs. ?
Govt too busy denigrating foreigners 😡
An FE college i know run various trade courses, including 'wet trades'. Real world training, bricklaying outside. Until Oct. when for some reason they stopped turning up. Didn't like the cold apparently. Brits don't want to do these jobs unless relatives all ready in the trade. This has to change.
It's such a double edged sword, I feel like starmer is gently nudging back toward Europe, but the idea he can just say right, "we tried brexit, it failed, let's rejoin! "
I'd like us to be back in, I just don't see how it's done at the moment. I don't hear anyone local to me clamouring for a return, EVER! So how do you pitch the idea with a right wing media and a populist reform party salivating at the idea of fighting a battle on this subject?
Oh I'd love to be back in also and agree with you. The road back in is long and requires the Tory refuk hardliners to be neutralised, humiliated and dare I say it, buried under their own excrement before both the UK and EU are convinced we are a serious and stable nation.
That was one of the fears about not meeting the target. A property developer told me that most property developers have several projects planning permission but can't start because we don't have enough plummers or Electricians.
Free movement will solve that problem within 6 months
There are plenty of 18 year olds who do not want to go to uni who could learn the skills. Why can’t we invest in training colleges that do full time courses post 18.
The UK had a great track record where FE Colleges trained young people.
The Tories deliberately destroyed it, by continued underfunding of said colleges and work place Apprenticeships.
I've been saying it for years, we need to really look at alternative types of homes as a real viable alternative to traditional brick and mortar, and not just curiosities or novelties.
If only the UK would invest in apprenticeships and ongoing training instead of plundering foreign territories, that do.
Qatar, Saudi use India btw, great tradesfolk, tgeres no world shortage just a UK planning one
Tory government deliberately underfunded FE College courses and work Apprenticeships.
Started around 2012 and continued fir the next 12yrs. Result: No fresh tradespeople.
The 'Trades' continued to vote Tory, despite knowing that no new people were being trained!
Now look at the UK!
Tony Blair Frankie, Tony Blair
Degrees, degrees, pointless worthless endless degrees
Incredibly Euan Blair has become a millionaire out of emulating something "The State" should have been doing

How keen would you be to return to plague island?
We’re in deep trouble.
