Some important context: I'm a software developer, and I work primarily these days with Cursor, but for the purposes of this thread, it really only matters that it's a VSCode fork that can directly connect to WSL 2 and use it as a "workspace" of sorts that feels like native Linux.

If the laptop went into "sleep mode" from closing the lid for an indeterminate amount of time (this happened seemingly randomly), my Cursor instance would lose connectivity to WSL.

My Cursor shell seemed to work, and Wezterm (my primary terminal emulator) *seemingly* worked fine.

The only way I found to solve this odd disconnect was to completely restart WSL from the Powershell command line with:

wsl --shutdown

and

wsl -d

This has the added, supremely annoying effect of causing Docker Desktop to crash the WSL integration, and once the WSL reboot completes, sometimes Docker would pick it up without issue.

Other times, it required a hard reboot of the entire laptop.

Once WSL was rebooted, Cursor would have to be hard-restarted to be able to establish a proper connection to a WSL workspace again.

Sometimes after a WSL reboot, any terminals that attempted to run inside WSL would hang permanently.

Like, open Wezterm, and the shell never starts. Wezterm itself was fine.
