U.S. hockey players in the NHL are usually more educated because they're drafted from the NCAA, as opposed to the Major Junior system in Canada where most players quit school to focus on hockey.

I'd argue it's essentially the same in the U.S. Many future NHLers do not finish high school at the local level as they're playing for hockey teams all over the country before they get to University level and often finish high school remotely with tutors. Academics are far down the priority list.

Guys who play in the CHL are basically done with school around grade 9-10, especially if they're leaving home to play.
