I've been wondering this myself. I understand there's a tradition for ex presidents to ride off into the sunset; but noting the stakes, why isn't every ex president AND vice speaking up?

Is Obama’s reason for staying out of everything that he doesn’t want to “taint his legacy”? Or does he not give much of a fuck because he’s a rich, jaded political operator? And does it not matter either way since the effect is the same?
