Going to take a contrarian view. Superficial similarities with the Nazis do not mean the MAGA movement is the same thing. We are not 1930s Germany. Understanding this is important for several reasons, the most important being that invoking the Nazis defines down just how exceptional they were.

I can see that point completely. But I think it is interesting to see how using racist scapegoats and propaganda is similar. Our own U.S. history of racism is what defines our situation NOW, though. Agreed.

I'm 59 years old - for my entire life, I've always thought that the US, for all its flaws and stains on its history, had a set of institutions that were painstakingly built with values of fairness, transparency, objectivity and neutrality. Watching that crumble is a sobering experience.

You can point to many ways that American institutions didn't serve the poor or minorities well in the past. I never said they're perfect. But that's a different topic. The destruction of the independence of places like USAID, NOAA, the NIH, or the Justice Department - that's what I'm talking about.

Another good read is Guilt About the Past, by Schlink. It helps to define who does and does not bear responsibility after a great crime against humanity – and so gives us impetus to do those things that we can to undermine or prevent those crimes now.

Thank you! Just read Frauen, Alison Owings. She interviewed German women from that time. HARD to read. But enlightening. Interesting connection - the idea of the "hausjude" and our white idea of "a Black friend." "I had a Jewish friend, therefore I was not an anti-semite."
