I am 54 years old. I stepped back from Moms Demand Action after 11 years because I understood that power is finite. Organizations and nations can’t evolve if they don’t have new rolling leadership. This isn’t about age, it’s about hoarding power.

One of my pipe-dream fixes for all levels of gov't term limits is: normal election for first 10 years or before 60. After that, instead of simple majority to win, every 2 years means 5% more for victory.

You can stay in office only if you're really popular and can get votes. Otherwise, bye Bob!

Personally, think great leaders mentor their replacements. They deliberately select people smarter than themselves, more skilled, better communicators, more savvy, and help them along. They're needed right now. They're ready.

So many older “leaders” I’ve come across have the “make yourself irreplaceable” mentality around job security. They see succession planning as an insult and a personal threat. They literally sabotage next-gen colleagues to maintain control. It’s a wicked mindset. It’s gotta go.

At 61, I am in complete support of people over 60 moving aside for younger folks to take the reins. Yes, for their new ideas, fresh perspectives. But I also feel like it is truly THEIR futures that they should have agency over. Not, say, me, at 61.

The perfect argument for term limits! We need to remove the barnacles from Congress to name a few: Mitch McConnell, Chuck Grassley, Hal Rogers, Nancy Pelosi, any elected official with more than 15 years needs to be replaced.
We need new blood, ideas, vision and eradicate cronyism.

Repealing the 1929 Permanent Apportionment Act, which capped the House at 435 members, would help with this issue. Lifting that cap would be more beneficial for our democracy than putting hard term limits on legislators would be.
