Of course! A ten-year loan is a long time, and removal because of concerns about light is extremely normal. Objects cycle all the time. Ever had a picture fade because it sat on your wall too long? This is how museum staff care for things and ensure their endurance.

Yes, it’s normal to return an object to an owner who may have no need for it to be returned nor want it returned. If you go to NMAAHC you will see plenty of things are currently off view w/signs in their place. There is a lot to be upset about but this isn’t one of them. Good to be vigilant though.

If it’s donated it belongs to the Smithsonian. If it was a loan it is for a term by contract and will be returned when the contractual period is over.
