Barchester Towers (1857) is very chill about one character's inability to walk, even by modern standards. There has to be a fuss made about making sure she has a sofa to recline on, but otherwise she's the life of the party.

I dunno. Isn't her affliction the direct result of her evil temptress ways, because she had the unmitigated GALL to wed an ITALIAN, of all people? EVERYONE knows that no good can come of wedding an Italian, after all: evil, conniving, sneaky people by nature. She absolutely deserved what she got.
Trollope in general* is interesting writing women. When they're the main characters, they're virtuous and beautiful and unimaginably boring. But all of the side characters -- the ones who are allowed to be flawed -- are really, really fun, because they aren't constrained by Victorian virtue.
