My understanding is prefab home construction isn’t actually any cheaper than conventional construction in Australia.

Speed of assembly and under cover construction would both be benefits to present methods at least in the UK given our climate. In Australia the speed of assembly would presumably be of benefit even if the cost was the same.

Both the Germans and, I think, the Swedes are very good at modular housing. They're also amazingly efficient at erecting them. We definitely could learn from this

Thanks for this. I especially like the performance code which allows for both innovation and safety. I really like the wooden housing, it can give character and warmth to very simple designs. A plus for social housing which is often soul destroying.(more women employed too)

These are lovely inside and quick to build. Google #TighGrian I was very taken with the space and "feel" inside. They may be assembled in a couple of days. 2017 visit.

Why don't we...?

1. Prefabrication hasn't been invented yet in the UK

2. The few instances where prefab was implemented, such as at Urban Splash's House, the going concerns quickly went into administration

Building Design magazine provides a number of examples of modular construction over time. I can remember these https://www.architectsjournal.co.uk/archive/prefabrication-grows-up but I'm with you in that they all seem to be one off projects that don't become a pattern of regular use.
