Yes! You're correct: first level domains (e.g: vampire.example) are paid. We buy lots of first level domains and then let anyone create second level domains for free. Sometimes first level domains are very cheap (like $1 for a year!) and sometimes more expensive (average is around $10/year). 1/2
2/2 We buy most of our domains from https://Porkbun.com which is a great registrar and has many cheap domains if you do decide you'd like an original domain someday :) .top, .fyi and .name are some of the cheapest domain names at around $5 per year.
