I love how this painting depicts a woman doctor. It reminds me of Keiko Okami (born Keiko Nishida in 1859), the first Japanese woman to obtain a medical degree from a Western university (Women’s Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1889) who became the first woman to practice Western medicine in Japan

My Grandmother was paralyzed from the neck down from polio. My Mom didn’t see her outside an iron lung for 3 years as a small child. My Mom had to grow up fast. People are far removed from it now.
