He does not believe he will succeed by concentrating on tactics, or by concentrating on hiring the best players he can, or by concentrating on improving or motivating players, or opposition analysis, or in-game management.

He will succeed by doing all the above better than the others. In his mind, success happens when you outperform opposition managers on multiple fronts. That is why he works so hard. He constantly seeks incremental improvements on all fronts to gain an advantage.

When comparing league position to the average value across a club's squad, Röhl is performing exceptionally well (see chart).

As some may know, this account was launched after the Owls' first four games of the season, after which they had only three points. I believed the Owls would improve...

All this is why Southampton and Hamburger SV may want to take Röhl away from the Owls. Having spent most of the last decade in the lucrative Premier League, Southampton's squad is nine times more valuable than SWFC's. If Röhl accepts their offer, he will earn much more and work at Stapleford Campus.

Just seen that hes saying hes staying with us. I dont know how old you are but I remember a similar manager saying the same thing. Ron Atkinson said he was staying and then left shortly after. Mate when the Owls showed off the league cup on the town hall balcony I was 20 metres away and I couldn't have been happier. Then I caught sight of Ron and he looked really troubled. I remember it was very disconcerting but, later I decided I must have imagined it, it just didn't fit the occasion!

Thank you! It was somewhat out-of-date the moment I posted it. While I was writing, the news about Southampton’s appointment came through! But I hope my observations on Röhl, his abilities, and his motivations are about right.
