It is a combination of slipping your first stitch on each row (insert your needle like you are going to knit the stitch but simply slide it onto the needle unworked. Be sure to give a little tug to tighten it up.) and your tension. It does take practice. The body looks nice and even - great start!!
Well done Eddie… on a knit row slip the first stitch… on a purl row slip the first stitch as if you were going to knit it and always knit the last stitch of the purl row.
I cant answer for sure cos i do crochet but it seems like its that one side thats the issue ? The rest of the work looks really neat!!

I just started last week. I love the advice here! I’ve been so focused on the stitches I didn’t even look at my edges. 😬 now I see it in my practice squares though. We’re practicing a new stitch every week. Join us if you like. 🧶
Slip the first stitch (of every row.) Needle in like you're going to knit it (transfer to right needle) and then knit the second stitch. It will keep the edges nice and straight. ❤️🧶
And in the next round you can either slip that first stitch as if you were going to purl, and you will get a beautiful stocking stitch-like edge, OR as if you were going to knit, and get a garter stitch-like edge.
