Self determination has a been a mixed success. I'm not convinced that states based on national identity are a good idea. The advantage of mult-national empires is they bring peace and stability for centuries rather than just decades. China, which is multi-national, has lasted for 2500 years.
China is an ethnostate with a dominant ethnicity, that's why they persecute the Uyghurs.
Self-determination is the only principle that can avoid world war. Obviously, people LOVE carving up other people's states, forcing new regimes on them. If it was legal they'd do it all the time.
This website is full of people who would be astonished and disgusted to hear that someone supports the right of Israelis to decide what Israel will be like, and denies anyone else the right to forcibly remake them. "You just want Israel to STAY in it's CURRENT FORM?? Where only the Israelis decide?"
And they know that what they are demanding, the end of a state, would most likely involve nuclear war, since the state they want to dissolve is widely thought to be nuclear-armed. I guess if you've already committed to endorsing a forever war, why not have it set in a nuclear wasteland.
Self-determination has been the cause of most of the wars that have occured since it became common after the Napoleonic wars. Few westerners understand the internal politics of China. The rights of all national/ethnic groups are respected as long as they do not insist on self determination.
