There are some good thoughts here, but no acknowledgement of the degree to which private health insurers and pharma companies have captured the system in which they operate, to their own benefit. The costs and benefits described in this thread are IMPOSSIBLE without fundamental structural change.

I absolutely agree that insurance shouldn't be tied to your job. My sister is stuck after a cancer diagnosis. She's in remission, but had to go back to a job she hates because she provides the family insurance. If they switched to her husband's company it would cost double what they are paying now.

As long as Americans seem to believe we can have whatever we want at no cost it’s hard to believe it can be reformed (see discussion of tax cuts while a trillion dollar deficit is being run)

In order to achieve any health reform we must first reform our election spending laws. As long as there are healthcare lobbies funding Congress, we can't have reform. Congress should be able to vote on any reforms without the threat of losing campaign funding.

Here's one thing we can and should do. Make Medicare Advantage Plans cover everything that Medicare A and B cover. Appeals go to Medicare officials not to the private health care employees.
