A caveat though: a lot of articles suggest almonds as a protein swap. US-grown almonds ( mostly from CA) are awful for the environment. Sucking the dwindling water table dry, killing honey bees. Eat pecans instead. Native to southern US, hardy, far less upkeep, far less water-intensive. And cheaper!

In general I am opposed to carbon reduction strategies that put the onus on individuals rather than super-polluters, BUT cutting back on red meat (you don't even have to eliminate it! Just eat no more than 1x per week) makes a big difference.

the almonds up in the northern central valley by the watershed and the delta are actually pretty sustainable, especially where they're starting to do flood irrigation when there's too much water, has the added benefit of recharging aquifers
overproduce for export down south tho
we are simply more willing to devastate our environment in permanent ways than other countries 🙃
