Midwives do so much more than just delivering babies. They provide prenatal care, postnatal care, and baby care. They provide a more personalized experience that most pregnant women want. They deliver babies in hospitals and at home. They work with doctors as needed. They cost less than doctors.

A midwife completes a 4-year degree which is focussed on pregnancy, birth, postpartum care, and involves a placement where students attend births, as well as ongoing education in neonatal resuscitation, CPR, emergency skills, and foetal health surveillance.

Midwives have the same training as for neonatal intensive care and the same equipment as a level one rural hospital and are primary care providers regulated by a college. They provide prenatal and postnatal support including nursing guidance.

There are 3,400 on the waitlist for midwifery care in Alberta, and 4,500 receiving care. There are only 180 registered midwives in Alberta, and although Alberta is ranked the third highest in Canada for midwives, it’s obviously not nearly enough. Midwives are essential healthcare providers.
