That's not what I've encountered. Previous owner of our house told me how she remembered the fear when German soldiers marched into their kitchen demanding food, and a neighbour here (61) has compiled a little museum about the village during WW2. Le Pen has skilfully dodged connection with Nazis.

And how old would she be now, in this moment? I'm an amateur historian and I know how few veterans of the war are left. These people are so few as to make literally no difference. Wheeled out at ceremonies to make ourselves feel better about ignoring the lesson of history.

It's true they are few, but their children's generation, of which I am one, grew up very much in the shadow of WW2. I don't believe France has forgotten the occupation and De Gaulle - the country nearly fell apart. Every town has a street named 8 Mai 1945.

We had a lady visit us who lived here as a young girl in the war. Told us she was scared of the Nazis patrolling our lane, so she lived in the village 5k away in the week with her g/parents, coming home for the weekends. She hates the 'boche'. I know her g/daughter voted Le Pen!

I know. Our commune has one too. My point is that even though there are still those with that association, it simply doesn't matter. They'll vote for the one who promises the trains will run on time. The one who tells them the Arab is stealing their job. Perennial problem worldwide.
