Doug, you can think the contract is bad all day long, but I must inform you that affording the Mets will quite literally never be a problem for someone worth more than 21 billion dollars.
Of course 38-year-old DH Juan Soto won't be worth the money. But for the next 8 or 9 years, it's as good a bet as any that this huge contract will be good, and maybe excellent.
I would have been happy for Steinbrenner to have swung this deal.
$15 million but much worse is that they reportedly added on a 16th year which turned the AAV difference from $1 million to $5 million. Just asinine negotiating.
I’m going more Hal though. Most reporters felt confident (assuming based on what they heard from Soto’s camp) if the Yankee offer was competitive to the Mets he’d take less to stay. Tacking on an extra year AND being the lesser offer, be it 750 or 760, was guaranteed to insult him.
Figured the extra year would be a good thing, though at that number, its a minute difference and Cohen probably just kept adding on with every Yankee offer Boras told him about.
For superstar players with multiple seasons in their 20s’ left, an extra year only has value if it’s adding money. It was already unlikely Soto was still playing in a 15th year, so the Yankees basically said “Hey what if still less but you’re also getting paid the total sum slower?”
I ain’t mad at all. He sold out for every last dollar and that contract is not going to age well. Now it’s on Cashman to build a team which I don’t have faith in

Gonna really suck if the difference was like 10 mil or something.
Steve Cohen is his new King George that he can keep milking now.
