europe and asia do it right. Europe - rotation based system, no metrics. Asia full on competition, but motivational with students want to be at a univ. None investing in fancy buildings.

thats right. VC/DVCs/deans/HoSs dont get 2-5x proff salary. they just get teaching releif for a bit (not even full) and admin support, and go back to their substantial role after the term is up. its not only about salary saving - its all around - recruitment firm, fancy office, layers of admin etc.

Agreed on this point (I came from US pre-full-on-bloat) but successive governments have stretched do-more-with-less to the breaking point. As in, we're all breaking for many of the same reasons as you. People are necessary to both teaching and learning, not just resource drains.
