Sometimes I do go with my gut, there is definitely value in trusting the strength of your original idea, too. In this particular case, my original idea was too vague and I really needed to see it before I could start painting the final piece.

I wanted to make a Lovecraftian horror piece to apply to Chaosium at the time. I knew I wanted something big and slimy and searched the books for a suitable monster, finding the formless spawn to be a perfect candidate. Next I sketched up the idea.

Developing my design for the monster, I came up with the idea of having the partially-digested bones in the spawn's body form teeth and limbs. That made the whole thing click for me.

Figuring out the exact design of the monster took a lot more iteration. I was concerned with it looking too comical or like pac man, so I avoided the head being too round. The spikes on the back made it feel more menacing.
