I recall on the scalawags podcast, at a time when I was also doing some Perl programming, that some Perl programmers being introduced to the Scala found it remarkably similar to Perl. I think we've come a long way

That's comforting to hear. I've slung a lot of Perl, but it's been a long while. I periodically quest for a better scripting experience, but I never really find what I'm looking for. And really, scripting's pretty imperative by nature anyway (by my own definition).

I still `perl -pi -e` to do search-and-replace in files. there used to be one awk invocation I still did, but it seems my brain finally relaxed its grip on it
