They're not. They predate eggs and nestlings. They're really not very pleasant animals and Im a wildlife lover. It's such a pity they look cute.
We are lucky to have some remaining reds locally where I live but greys are trying to establish themselves.

Oh absolutely! I hate to say it but they tend to meet a swift end when spotted locally. For the reds of course.
I read something about potentially introducing a contraceptive programme?

I have to say I'm a fan - it's far more humane than trapping and killing and would provide a permanent solution. Having just had a quick Google I think there's still work going on in this area but it's very slow. They are very sensitive to a potential public backlash I think.
