My friends John Avalon and Richard Haas are right BUT It’s not just the classroom. 80% of adults couldnt pass the citizenship exam. And for women its especially problematic- I’ve been teaching civics to adult women for 11 years. We need more resources devoted to that. Democracy depends on it.

I've been saying this for at least 20 years. 5 minutes on any political post on any social media platform is all it takes to see that most Americans don't have a clue how our government works. It's literally how we got here.

My thoughts have been what about the older generation? This isn’t just a younger person problem. There are plenty of people, especially in Congress, that are quite old who don’t seem to remember our values and how things work. How do we fix this?

Quite a few people have to take tests to become US Citizens - tests with questions that currents citizens feel ENTITLED to not have to know. Why should current citizens get a free pass? They should have to pass the test to be able to register to vote: https://www.uscis.gov/citizenship/civics-practice-test-2008

To be fair, US STEM scores are far behind other countries' scores. So while I agree that civics lessons are important, US kids (in general) aren't crushing it in STEM subjects.

As a retired teacher......I have been saying this for YEARS...... Civics and a Lifeskills (filling out a tax form, W2, budgeting, etc....) class should be mandatory!
