Apropos Rheinland: the first Autobahn was not built by, or rather under, Hitler. It was today’s A555, between Cologne and Bonn, built in 1929. Used to be known as Diplomatenrennbahn when Bonn was home to the West-German government

Tim Jonze gets this right in his excellent piece for the Guardian, which is much better than the New Statesman podcast, mostly because it also mentions Conny Plank's studio in Wolperath (Neunkirchen-Seelscheid)!

I'm getting all nostalgic here. I grew up in the Rhein-Sieg-Kreis. (the county on the right bank of the Rhine where Neunkirchen-Seelscheid is, and part of CGN Airport)

Very interesting. I for one still can’t pick a favourite between Autobahn and The Man-Machine, but Autobahn was clearly the more influential of the two for the industry.
